EO Solar provides a Germany-wide overview of rooftop solar potential and the current expansion of rooftop photovoltaic installations at different administrative levels. It supports planners and decision-makers at municipal, regional and national level by providing consistent, location-specific information for developing and implementing effective strategies to expand rooftop photovoltaics.
EO Solar is based on up-to-date high-resolution digital surface models and geospatial data provided by the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), combined with machine-learning methods and information on existing photovoltaic installations from the German Market Master Data Register. The solar potential is calculated using parameters such as solar irradiation, roof orientation, and shading from neighboring buildings or vegetation. By applying a consistent methodology to approximately 20 million buildings across Germany, EO Solar complements existing regional and municipal solar cadasters and provides a harmonized information basis for planning and accelerating the expansion of rooftop photovoltaics.
