EO Wald is a platform that enables the display of forest canopy cover loss (FCCL) in German forests from autumn 2017 onwards at a spatial resolution of 10 metres. In addition to pixel-based visualisation of the point in time, EO Wald also allows the display of the temporal progression of FCCL at various administrative levels, thereby facilitating regional comparisons of different patterns.
EO Wald is underpinned by dense satellite time series of optical Sentinel-2 A/B/C and Landsat-8/9 data. These are used to detect disturbances on a monthly basis, including both biotic and abiotic disturbances as well as forestry measures such as sanitary felling and planned harvesting.
Following the droughts, heatwaves and storms of recent years and their associated impacts on German forests, there is a growing need for timely and spatially comprehensive information on forest dynamics. EO Wald addresses this need and provides consistent, large-scale information to support sustainable forest management.
